Diane Sterling was the mother of Emily Fornell, and the ex-wife of both Tobias Fornell and Leroy Jethro Gibbs. She worked as a criminal investigator for the Internal Revenue Service.

In January 2015, she was shot in the head and effectively murdered by the mercenary Sergei Mishnev. Mere weeks later, Fornell avenged her death by killing Mishnev.
